With international trade volume growing fast, the Port of Sendai-Shiogama has been playing an increasingly important role as a major freight-shipping hub for the Tohoku Region.
The port serves also as one of the largest container terminals in the region, handling growing international container traffic.

The Port of Sendai-Shiogama serves ocean container vessels on the main Japan-North American routes as well as those sailing the routes between Japan and China, Europe, Southeast Asia and South Korea in addition to freighters traveling feeder routes between Sendai and other major ports in Japan including those in the Tokyo metropolitan area.
